Andrew McNaughton

Andrew McNaughton, born on February twenty-fifth, eighteen eighty-seven, was a distinguished Canadian diplomat and military personnel. Before the outbreak of the First World War, he made significant contributions as a professor of engineering at McGill University, where he laid the groundwork for his future endeavors in both military and diplomatic fields.

During the First World War, McNaughton served valiantly as an officer in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. His bravery on the battlefield earned him two wounds and the prestigious Distinguished Service Order on two occasions, marking him as a notable figure in military history.

In the interwar years, he took on the role of Chief of the General Staff, where he played a crucial part in modernizing and mechanizing the Canadian Army, ensuring it was well-prepared for future conflicts. As the Second World War unfolded, McNaughton commanded major Canadian field units and ultimately led the First Canadian Army until his relief in nineteen forty-three.

Following his military service, he transitioned to a political role as Minister of National Defence, a position he held until the conclusion of the war. His tenure was marked by significant decisions, including the controversial choice to send conscripts, often referred to as 'Zombies,' for overseas service, highlighting the complexities of wartime leadership.
