Andrew Scheer

Andrew Scheer, born on May 20, 1979, is a prominent Canadian politician who has represented the Regina—Qu'Appelle riding as a Member of Parliament since 2004. His political journey began at a young age, as he was elected at just twenty-five, showcasing his early commitment to public service. Scheer’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in criminology, political science, and history, which has informed his approach to governance.

From 2011 to 2015, Scheer served as the 35th Speaker of the House of Commons, making history as the youngest individual to hold this esteemed position. His tenure as Speaker was marked by a dedication to parliamentary procedure and decorum, which earned him respect across party lines. Following the Conservative Party's defeat in the 2015 federal election, he launched a leadership campaign, ultimately becoming the party leader on May 27, 2017, in a surprising victory over Maxime Bernier.

As the leader of the Conservative Party and the Official Opposition from 2017 to 2020, Scheer focused on economic development, fiscal restraint, and reducing government inefficiencies. He was a vocal opponent of the federal carbon tax and advocated for the construction of pipelines to bolster Canada's energy sector. In the 2019 federal election, under his leadership, the Conservatives garnered a plurality of the popular vote, although they remained in the opposition.

Despite his efforts, Scheer faced criticism following the election, leading to his resignation as party leader in December 2019. He was succeeded by Erin O'Toole in August 2020. In a twist of fate, Scheer returned to lead the opposition briefly in 2025 after Pierre Poilievre lost his riding, demonstrating his enduring influence in Canadian politics.
