Andrew Yao

Andrew Yao, born on December twenty-fourth, nineteen forty-six, is a distinguished Chinese computer scientist and theoretical physicist. He currently serves as the dean of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences (IIIS) at Tsinghua University, where he continues to contribute significantly to the field of computational theory.

Yao's academic journey began at National Taiwan University, followed by a doctorate in physics from Harvard University in nineteen seventy-two. He furthered his education with a second doctorate in computer science from the University of Illinois in nineteen seventy-five. His teaching career has spanned prestigious institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and the University of California, Berkeley.

In nineteen eighty-six, Yao was appointed the William and Edna Macaleer Professor of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University. He is renowned for his groundbreaking work, particularly the application of the minimax theorem, which led to the formulation of Yao's principle. His contributions to the field were recognized when he was awarded the ACM Turing Award in two thousand.

Having been a naturalized U.S. citizen for many years, Yao made a significant decision in two thousand fifteen when he renounced his U.S. citizenship alongside Yang Chen-Ning, subsequently becoming an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
