Andronikos I Gidos, known in Greek as Ανδρόνικος Κομνηνός Γίδος, served as the Emperor of Trebizond from the year one thousand two hundred twenty-two until one thousand two hundred thirty-five. Uniquely, he stands out as the only ruler of Trebizond who was not a direct descendant of the state's founder, Alexios I Megas Komnenos.
There is speculation, as noted by historian George Finlay, that Andronikos may have been the same individual who held the position of general under Theodore I Laskaris. His military acumen was evident during his reign, particularly when Trebizond successfully defended itself against a siege by the Seljuk Turks.
In addition to his defensive successes, Andronikos I also played a role in regional politics by supporting the Khwarazmshah in a battle against the Seljuks, although this alliance ultimately did not lead to victory. His reign was marked by significant challenges and achievements that shaped the history of Trebizond.
