Andy Kaufman, born on January 17, 1949, was a groundbreaking American entertainer and performance artist known for his unconventional approach to comedy. Often referred to as an 'anti-comedian,' Kaufman rejected traditional joke-telling, famously stating, 'I am not a comic, I have never told a joke.' His commitment to entertainment was evident in his promise to engage audiences in unique and unexpected ways.

His rise to fame began in the early 1970s, performing in small comedy clubs before gaining national attention in 1975 on the inaugural season of Saturday Night Live. Kaufman's Foreign Man character laid the groundwork for his iconic role as Latka Gravas on the beloved television series Taxi, which aired from 1978 to 1983. This period marked a significant evolution in his career, as he continued to explore the boundaries of performance art and comedy.

Kaufman's performances were characterized by their unpredictability, often blurring the lines between reality and performance. He frequently appeared as himself or as the obnoxious lounge singer Tony Clifton, captivating audiences with his unique style.
