Ang Duong

Ang Duong, born on June twelfth, seventeen ninety-six, was a pivotal figure in Cambodian history, serving as king from eighteen forty-eight until his death in eighteen sixty. His reign marked a significant turning point for a kingdom that had endured centuries of turmoil and decline, as he sought to restore national unity and identity.

During his rule, Ang Duong implemented the first substantial revision of the legal codex in centuries, reflecting his commitment to reform. He also championed religious and cultural advancements, fostering a sense of pride and cohesion among his people. His political strategies were aimed at minimizing foreign interference, a crucial endeavor given the increasing encroachment from Siamese and Vietnamese forces.

In a bold move, Ang Duong sought to establish a sovereign alliance with colonial France, a decision that would ultimately lead to a ninety-year period of French protectorate over Cambodia. Ascending the throne with the grand title of Preah Karuna Preah Bat Samdech Preah Harireak Reamea Issathipadei Ang Duong, he became the progenitor of the two main royal houses of Cambodia, the Houses of Norodom and Sisowath.
