She began her acting journey at a young age, making her debut in the 1987 Broadway production of Coastal Disturbances. By the age of fourteen, she had already made a significant mark in the industry, winning the Obie Award for Distinguished Performance by an Actress for her role as Edna Arkins in the 1991 Off-Broadway production of The Good Times Are Killing Me.

Goethals gained widespread recognition for her role as the sister of Macaulay Culkin's character in the beloved holiday classic Home Alone in 1990.
