Anita Bryant

Anita Bryant, born on March 25, 1940, is an American singer, beauty pageant contestant, recording artist, and writer. She first gained national attention as the winner of the 1958 Miss Oklahoma beauty pageant, which paved the way for her successful career in music during the early 1960s. Bryant achieved three top twenty hits in the United States, establishing herself as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.

From 1969 to 1980, she served as a brand ambassador for the Florida Citrus Commission, promoting orange juice and becoming a household name. However, her career took a controversial turn when she became an outspoken opponent of gay rights in the late 1970s. In 1977, she spearheaded the Save Our Children campaign, aiming to repeal a local ordinance in Miami-Dade County that prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation.

This campaign sparked significant backlash from supporters of gay rights across the nation, who condemned her actions and organized a boycott of the orange juice she endorsed. Despite her efforts, the ordinance was ultimately repealed on June 7, 1977, with a decisive sixty-nine percent majority vote. Although this was a personal victory for Bryant, it came at a great cost to her public image, leading to her being blacklisted in the industry.

Following the fallout from her activism, Bryant's contract with the Florida Citrus Commission was terminated three years later, and her financial situation deteriorated, culminating in two bankruptcy filings. Additionally, her divorce from Bob Green further impacted her stability, leaving her in a state of financial insolvency.
