Anna Lee Fisher

Anna Lee Fisher, born on August twenty-fourth, nineteen forty-nine, is a distinguished American chemist, emergency physician, and former NASA astronaut. She made history in nineteen eighty-four as the first mother to fly in space, showcasing her remarkable ability to balance family life with a groundbreaking career in aerospace.

A graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Fisher earned her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry in nineteen seventy-one. She then pursued graduate studies, focusing on X-ray crystallographic studies of metallocarboranes, before transitioning to the UCLA School of Medicine, where she received her Doctor of Medicine degree in nineteen seventy-six. Following her internship at Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, California, in nineteen seventy-seven, she specialized in emergency medicine.

Fisher was selected as an astronaut candidate in January nineteen seventy-eight, joining NASA Astronaut Group 8, the first group to include women. Throughout her career at NASA, she contributed to three major programs: the Space Shuttle, the International Space Station, and the Orion spacecraft. Her early assignments included serving as the Astronaut Office representative for the Canadarm remote manipulator system and supporting search and rescue operations for the first four Space Shuttle missions.

In November nineteen eighty-four, she flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on the STS-51-A mission, where she utilized the Canadarm to successfully retrieve two satellites. After taking a leave of absence from nineteen eighty-nine to nineteen ninety-five to raise her family, Fisher returned to the Astronaut Office, focusing on training and procedures for the International Space Station. She served as a capsule communicator from January twenty-eleven to August twenty-thirteen, leading communications for ISS Expedition thirty-three.

Fisher continued her work with NASA until her retirement in April twenty-seventeen, contributing to the development of the Orion spacecraft's display systems. Her legacy as a pioneering astronaut and dedicated professional continues to inspire future generations.
