Anne Lister

Anne Lister, born on April third, seventeen ninety-one, was an English diarist and landowner renowned for her candid revelations about her life and relationships, earning her the title of 'the first modern lesbian.' Hailing from a minor landowning family in Shibden, Calderdale, West Riding of Yorkshire, Lister's life was marked by her numerous lesbian love affairs, which began in her schooldays and continued through her extensive travels abroad.

With a muscular and androgynous appearance, Lister was often seen dressed in black, reflecting her unique identity. Highly educated and intellectually curious, she was later referred to, albeit unkindly, as 'Gentleman Jack.' Her most significant relationship was with Ann Walker, with whom she had a notional marriage in Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, York, a moment now celebrated as a landmark in the history of lesbian marriage in Britain.

Lister's diaries provide a rich tapestry of contemporary life in the West Riding of Yorkshire, detailing her interests in various fields such as medicine, mathematics, landscaping, mining, railways, and canals. Many of her diary entries were written in code, a mystery that remained unsolved until long after her passing. The graphic portrayals of her lesbian relationships within these diaries were so frank that they were initially dismissed as a hoax until their authenticity was confirmed.
