Her passion for anti-fascist activism ultimately led her into exile, during which she formed a close bond with the family of renowned novelist Thomas Mann.

However, her journey was not without struggles, as she faced a growing addiction to morphine that would shadow her later years.

In America, she captured the attention of the young writer Carson McCullers, who was infatuated with Schwarzenbach and dedicated her work, Reflections in a Golden Eye, to her.
