Annie Easley

Annie Easley, born on April twenty-third, nineteen thirty-two, in Birmingham, Alabama, was a trailblazing African American mathematician, computer scientist, and engineer. Raised by a single mother in a segregated society, Annie faced numerous challenges in accessing educational and professional opportunities. Despite these obstacles, her mother prioritized her education, leading Annie to excel at Holy Family High School, where she graduated as valedictorian.

After high school, Easley enrolled at Xavier University in New Orleans to pursue a degree in pharmacy. However, her enthusiasm for the field diminished, prompting her to return to Birmingham briefly in nineteen forty-five. During this time, she encountered the harsh realities of voting restrictions, including the poll tax, which fueled her passion for advocating for women's rights and voting access.

Following her marriage and relocation to Cleveland, Ohio, Easley struggled to find a pharmacy position due to limited job availability. A pivotal moment came when she discovered an article about a mathematician opportunity at NASA. This marked the beginning of her illustrious career as a NASA engineer, where she made significant contributions to rocket technologies and inspired countless women of color to pursue careers in STEM.

Throughout her decades-long career, Easley played a crucial role in programming technologies, energy conversion, and shuttle launches, addressing NASA's need for interdisciplinary mathematicians and programmers. Her work on project Centaur launches and her involvement in outreach programs for young innovators were instrumental in breaking down gender barriers in STEM fields.
