Anote Tong

Anote Tong, born on June eleventh, nineteen fifty-two, is a prominent I-Kiribati environmental activist and former politician. He served as the fourth president of Kiribati from two thousand three to two thousand sixteen, representing the Pillars of Truth party. With a unique heritage that includes half Chinese descent, Tong has made significant contributions to both his nation and the global community.

His political journey began with a narrow victory in July two thousand three, where he secured forty-seven point four percent of the votes against his older brother, Harry Tong, who garnered forty-three point five percent, and private lawyer Banuera Berina, who received nine point one percent. Despite allegations of electoral fraud raised by the opposition, the High Court of Tarawa confirmed the integrity of the election.

Tong's leadership was marked by his re-election on October seventeenth, two thousand seven, where he achieved a commanding sixty-four percent of the vote. He continued to serve the nation, being re-elected for a third term in two thousand twelve, although with a notably reduced percentage compared to his previous victories.

Internationally, Anote Tong is best known for his relentless advocacy for climate change awareness. His efforts have brought significant attention to the existential threats posed by climate change, particularly for low-lying island nations like Kiribati.
