Ansel Adams

Ansel Adams, born on February 20, 1902, was a renowned American landscape photographer and environmentalist, celebrated for his striking black-and-white images of the American West. His artistic journey began at the tender age of 14 when he received his first camera during a visit to Yosemite National Park, a place that would profoundly influence his work and advocacy for environmental conservation.

Adams was instrumental in the founding of Group f/64, a collective of photographers who championed 'pure' photography, emphasizing sharp focus and a full tonal range. Alongside Fred Archer, he developed the Zone System, a groundbreaking technique that allowed photographers to achieve their desired final prints through a deep understanding of exposure, negative development, and printing processes.

His commitment to environmental conservation was not just a personal passion but a driving force behind his photographic practice. Adams worked closely with the Sierra Club and was contracted by the United States Department of the Interior to capture the beauty of national parks. His relentless advocacy played a significant role in the expansion of the National Park system, earning him the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980.

In addition to his photographic achievements, Adams was a key figure in establishing the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, which marked a pivotal moment in the recognition of photography as an art form. He contributed to the first photography exhibition at the museum, co-founded the influential magazine Aperture, and helped establish the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, solidifying his legacy in the world of photography.
