Ansprand

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Ansprand

Ansprand, born in the year six hundred fifty-seven, was a notable figure in the history of the Lombards, serving as king for a brief period in the year seven hundred twelve. His journey to the throne was marked by significant events, including his role as the duke of Asti and regent during the minority of Liutpert from seven hundred to seven hundred one.

His reign was not without challenges; Ansprand faced defeat at Novara by Raginpert, which led to his exile during a tumultuous succession war. Seeking refuge, he fled to the court of Theudebert, duke of Bavaria, in the year seven hundred two. However, his fortunes changed in seven hundred eleven when he returned with a formidable army, bolstered by support from many Austrians, including the men of Venetia and the east.

A decisive battle ensued near Pavia against King Aripert II, who had usurped the throne. As the tide turned against him, Aripert attempted to escape with his treasures but tragically drowned in the Ticino River. This pivotal moment led to Ansprand being acclaimed as sovereign, marking his ascension to the throne in March of the year seven hundred twelve.

Sadly, Ansprand's reign was short-lived, as he passed away in June of the same year, leaving behind his only surviving son, Liutprand, to inherit the kingdom. His legacy continued through his marriage to Teudelinda and his fatherhood of Imberg, ensuring that his lineage would play a role in the ongoing saga of Lombard history.
