Ansumane Mané

Ansumane Mané, born on January first, nineteen forty, was a prominent Bissau-Guinean military officer and politician. His career was marked by significant events in the tumultuous history of Guinea-Bissau, particularly during the struggle for independence from Portugal, where he served as a bodyguard to President João Bernardo Vieira.

Initially a close ally of Vieira, Mané played a crucial role in the 1980 coup that ousted President Luís Cabral. His loyalty earned him the position of head of the armed forces during Vieira's presidency. However, this relationship soured in nineteen ninety-eight when Vieira accused Mané of smuggling arms to separatist rebels in Senegal, leading to his dismissal.

In response to his ousting, Mané rallied the troops he once commanded and spearheaded a rebellion against Vieira's government. This uprising ignited a brief but bloody civil war, highlighting the deep divisions within the country and the complexities of military and political alliances.
