Anthony Ervin

Anthony Ervin, born on May 26, 1981, is a distinguished American swimmer celebrated for his remarkable achievements in competitive swimming. He made history at the 2000 Summer Olympics by winning a gold medal in the men's 50-meter freestyle, becoming the first United States citizen of African descent to secure an individual Olympic gold in swimming. Additionally, he earned a silver medal as part of the United States relay team in the 4×100-meter freestyle event, marking a significant milestone in Olympic history.

After a successful start to his career, Ervin stepped away from competitive swimming at the age of twenty-two in 2003. In a remarkable act of philanthropy, he auctioned his 2000 Olympic gold medal on eBay to support survivors of the devastating 2004 tsunami. However, his passion for the sport reignited, leading him to return to training in 2011.

Ervin's comeback culminated in his participation at the 2012 Summer Olympics, where he competed in the 50-meter freestyle event, finishing in fifth place. His journey took another inspiring turn in 2016 when he released his memoir, 'Chasing Water,' co-authored with Constantine Markides. That same year, at the age of thirty-five, he triumphed once more at the Summer Olympics, winning the 50-meter freestyle event and becoming the oldest individual Olympic gold medal winner in swimming, sixteen years after his first victory.
