Anthony Joseph Drexel

Anthony Joseph Drexel Sr. was born on September 13, 1826, and became a pivotal figure in the evolution of modern global finance following the American Civil War. As the leading partner of Drexel & Co. in Philadelphia, he was instrumental in establishing Drexel, Morgan & Co. in 1871, which later evolved into the renowned J.P. Morgan & Co., now known as JPMorgan Chase. His partnership with J. P. Morgan marked a significant milestone in the banking industry.

In addition to his banking achievements, Drexel was a visionary in education and the arts. He founded Drexel University in Philadelphia in 1891, contributing to the advancement of higher education. His commitment to public art and urban planning was evident when he became the first president of the Fairmount Park Art Association, which is recognized today as the Association for Public Art.
