Antoine Racine

Antoine Racine, born on January twenty-sixth, eighteen hundred twenty-two, was a prominent figure in the Canadian Roman Catholic Church. He served as the first Bishop of Sherbrooke from eighteen seventy-four until eighteen ninety-three, leaving a lasting legacy in the region.

In eighteen seventy-five, Racine founded the Séminaire Saint-Charles-Borromée, known in English as St. Charles Seminary. This degree-granting institution became notable for producing distinguished alumni, including Louis St. Laurent, who would later serve as Prime Minister of Canada and graduated in nineteen hundred two.

Racine's influence extended beyond education; he is also honored as the namesake of the Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue parish, commonly referred to as St-Antoine-de-Lennoxville. His contributions to the community and the church are commemorated by his burial in the Cathedral in Sherbrooke, where his legacy continues to inspire.
