Antonín Švehla

Antonín Švehla, born on April fifteenth, eighteen seventy-three, was a prominent Czechoslovak politician and economist. He played a pivotal role in the political landscape of the First Czechoslovak Republic, serving three terms as both the Interior Minister and the Prime Minister. As the leader of the Agrarian Party, Švehla was instrumental in the formation of the Pětka, a political alliance that he largely conceptualized, famously encapsulated by the slogan: 'We have agreed that we will agree.'

Švehla was a staunch supporter of professor Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk in the quest for Czechoslovak independence. His dedication to Czech nationalism was evident when he declined to run for the Vienna Reichsrat in nineteen eleven, asserting that 'In Vienna the Czechs are nobody, while in Prague they could be everything.' His commitment to the Czech cause was unwavering, and he was actively involved in organizations such as the Sokol gymnastics group and the Czechoslovak Masonic Lodge.

In the later years of his life, Švehla expressed deep concern over the rise of the German Nazi Party and the potential threats it posed to Czech democracy. His foresight into the political climate of Europe was a testament to his dedication to the nation he served.

In recognition of his contributions, the garden of the European Campus of Sciences Po Paris in Dijon, France, is named the 'Garden of the Agrarians of Antonín Švehla (eighteen seventy-three to nineteen thirty-three).' Additionally, a monument honoring his legacy stands in Hradec Králové, ensuring that his impact on Czechoslovak history is not forgotten.
