António de Abreu

António de Abreu, born in 1480, was a prominent Portuguese explorer and navigator whose contributions to maritime exploration in the 16th century are noteworthy. He served under the esteemed Afonso de Albuquerque, participating in significant military campaigns, including the conquest of Ormus in 1507 and the pivotal capture of Malacca in 1511, where he sustained injuries.

In November 1511, following his time in Malacca, de Abreu embarked on an ambitious exploratory voyage with four ships, aiming to uncover the riches of the Spice Islands in Maluku. His leadership marked a significant milestone in European exploration, as he spearheaded the first expedition to reach Timor and the Banda Islands in Indonesia in 1512.

De Abreu's voyages not only expanded the geographical knowledge of the time but also paved the way for future explorations in the region. His legacy as a navigator and explorer remains a testament to the adventurous spirit of the Age of Discovery.
