António Guterres

António Guterres, born on April thirtieth, nineteen forty-nine, in Lisbon, is a distinguished Portuguese and Timorese politician and diplomat. He has held the esteemed position of the ninth secretary-general of the United Nations since 2017. A member of the Portuguese Socialist Party, Guterres previously served as the prime minister of Portugal from nineteen ninety-five to two thousand two, leading the party to significant legislative victories during his tenure.

Guterres's academic journey began at Lisbon's Instituto Superior Técnico, where he studied physics and electrical engineering. His passion for education led him to briefly teach systems theory and telecommunications. His political career took off while he was involved in a Catholic youth group, eventually leading him to become the secretary-general of the Socialist Party from nineteen ninety-two to two thousand two.

During his time as prime minister, Guterres announced his resignation as the Socialist Party leader in two thousand two after the party faced losses in the local elections. Despite this setback, he remained in office until losing the general election to José Manuel Barroso's Social Democratic Party. Notably, public opinion polls in two thousand twelve and two thousand fourteen ranked him as the best prime minister of the previous thirty years.

Following his political career in Portugal, Guterres served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from two thousand five to two thousand fifteen, where he implemented significant reforms and addressed various global refugee crises. Elected as secretary-general in October two thousand sixteen, he became the first European to hold this position since Kurt Waldheim in nineteen eighty-one, focusing on critical issues such as peace, human rights, climate change, and refugee protection.
