Luis Antonio Valencia Mosquera, known as Antonio Valencia, is a celebrated Ecuadorian former professional footballer born on August 4, 1985. Renowned for his versatility, Valencia primarily played as a right-sided player, initially showcasing his skills as a right winger before transitioning into a formidable right-back. His remarkable career has solidified his status as one of the greatest footballers in Ecuador's history.
Valencia's journey began in the youth system at El Nacional, where he quickly became a first-team regular, making over eighty appearances and winning the Ecuadorian Serie A. In 2005, he made the leap to Europe, signing with La Liga's Villarreal. However, his time there was marked by limited opportunities, leading to loan spells at Recreativo and Wigan Athletic, where he eventually signed a three-year deal in January 2008.
His impressive performances at Wigan Athletic caught the attention of top clubs, culminating in a transfer to Manchester United in June 2009. During his decade-long tenure at United, Valencia achieved remarkable success, including two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups, three FA Community Shields, and the UEFA Europa League. He was honored as a member of the PFA Team of the Year in his debut season and captained the club in his final year.
After leaving Manchester United in July 2019, Valencia returned to Ecuador to join LDU Quito, where he celebrated winning the inaugural Copa Ecuador in his first season. He announced his retirement from professional football in May 2021, leaving behind a legacy that includes 99 caps and 11 goals for the Ecuador national team, with appearances in multiple international tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and Copa América.
