Anvari

Anvari, a distinguished Persian poet, was born in the year one thousand one hundred twenty-six in Abivard, a region that is now part of Turkmenistan. His journey through life led him to Balkh in Khorāsān, present-day Afghanistan, where he ultimately passed away. Anvari's academic pursuits in science and literature took place at the collegiate institute in Toon, now known as Ferdows in Iran, where he not only honed his poetic skills but also emerged as a notable astronomer.

His literary contributions are encapsulated in a collection known as the Divan, which features a diverse array of works including panegyrics, eulogies, and satire. Among his most celebrated pieces is the elegy titled 'Tears of Khorasan,' which was translated into English in the year one thousand seven hundred eighty-nine and is revered as one of the most exquisite poems in Persian literature. The Cambridge History of Iran recognizes Anvari as one of the preeminent figures in the realm of Persian literature.

Throughout his career, Anvari garnered royal favor through his panegyric dedicated to Sultan Sanjar, the Seljuk ruler of Khorasan from one thousand one hundred seventeen to one thousand one hundred fifty-seven. This acclaim allowed him to enjoy the patronage of Sanjar's successors. However, his fortunes shifted dramatically when a prophecy he made regarding disasters in October one thousand one hundred eighty-five did not come to fruition, leading to a decline in his standing with the monarchy.

In the wake of his fall from grace, Anvari was compelled to lead a life devoted to scholarly pursuits. Tragically, this period of hardship culminated in his decision to take his own life in the year one thousand one hundred eighty-nine, marking the end of a complex and impactful life.
