Anwar Ibrahim, born on August 10, 1947, in the Crown Colony of Penang during the Malayan Union, is a prominent Malaysian politician who has made significant contributions to the country's political landscape. He graduated from the University of Malaya and began his career as a leader in student organizations, including the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students and the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement. Anwar's political journey took a pivotal turn when he joined the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), where he rose to become the seventh deputy prime minister in 1993 and served as Minister of Finance from 1991, playing a crucial role during the 1997 Asian financial crisis.
In 1998, Anwar faced a dramatic fall from grace when he was removed from all government positions by then-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. This led him to spearhead the Reformasi movement against the government. His political struggles continued as he was imprisoned in April 1999 on charges of corruption and sodomy, but his conviction was overturned in 2004. Anwar returned to the political arena as the leader of the opposition from 2008 to 2015, uniting various opposition parties into the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, which contested the 2008 and 2013 general elections.
Despite facing further legal challenges, including a five-year prison sentence following a second sodomy conviction in 2015, Anwar's resilience shone through. While incarcerated, he rejoined Mahathir Mohamad in the new Pakatan Harapan coalition, which achieved a historic victory in the 2018 general election. After receiving a royal pardon, he returned to parliament in the 2018 Port Dickson by-election, while his wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, served as deputy prime minister.
Following the 2022 general election, Anwar was sworn in as the tenth prime minister of Malaysia on November 24, 2022. He appointed himself Minister of Finance and formed a unity government cabinet, which has faced scrutiny for its conservative policies. As ASEAN chairman since January 2025, Anwar has worked towards regional stability, facilitating a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. Known as a liberal reformer, he advocates for Islamic democracy and emphasizes the importance of judicial independence and good governance.
