Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Apichatpong Weerasethakul, born on July sixteenth, nineteen seventy, is a prominent Thai independent film director, screenwriter, film producer, and installation artist. Currently a professor at Tama Art University in Tokyo, he has carved a unique niche in the film industry by working outside the traditional confines of the Thai film studio system. His friends and fans affectionately call him 'Joe', a convenient nickname for those with longer Thai names.

Weerasethakul's filmography includes several acclaimed feature films, such as 'Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives', which won the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. Other notable works include 'Tropical Malady', awarded the Jury Prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, and 'Blissfully Yours', which received the top prize in the Un Certain Regard program at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. His film 'Syndromes and a Century' premiered at the sixty-third Venice International Film Festival, marking a significant milestone as the first Thai film to compete there.

In addition to his feature films, Weerasethakul has directed numerous short films and has gained recognition for his unconventional narrative structures and use of non-actors. His themes often explore dreams, nature, sexuality—including his own homosexuality—and the Western perceptions of Thailand and Asia. His film 'Cemetery of Splendour' premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, receiving critical acclaim.

Beyond filmmaking, Apichatpong has exhibited his work in various galleries, including FACT in Liverpool and the BFI Gallery in London. His contributions to the arts have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Principal Prince Claus Award in two thousand sixteen and the eighth edition of the Artes Mundi Prize. His first English-language film, 'Memoria', released in two thousand twenty-one, is an international collaboration set in Colombia.
