Araniko

Araniko, born in the year twelve forty-four in the Kathmandu Valley during the reign of Abhaya Malla, emerged as a pivotal figure in the artistic realms of Nepal and the Yuan dynasty of China. His contributions to architecture, painting, and astronomy were instrumental in fostering artistic exchanges between these regions.

One of his most notable achievements was the construction of the White Stupa at the Miaoying Temple in Beijing. His journey took a significant turn during the reign of Jayabhimadeva when he was commissioned to build a golden stupa in Tibet, where he also embraced monkhood.

Araniko's talents led him further into northern China, where he worked under the auspices of Kublai Khan, the founder of the Yuan dynasty. He brought with him the rich trans-Himalayan artistic traditions, leading a team of eighty artists to create several pagoda-style buildings that would leave a lasting impact on Chinese architecture.

In his later years, Araniko chose to renounce his monkhood and began a family, marking a new chapter in his life. His name, often rendered as Arniko or Araniko in historical texts, has sparked some confusion, with interpretations suggesting it could mean 'respectable brother from Nepal'.
