Archduke Ferdinand Karl Joseph of Austria-Este

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Archduke Ferdinand Karl Joseph of Austria-Este

Archduke Ferdinand Karl Joseph of Austria-Este, born on April twenty-fifth, seventeen eighty-one in Milan, was the third son of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Este and Princess Maria Beatrice Ricciarda d'Este, the last member and heiress of the House of Este. He embarked on a distinguished military career after attending the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt.

During the Napoleonic Wars, Ferdinand held significant command positions. In eighteen oh five, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Austrian forces during the War of the Third Coalition against France. Despite his army being surrounded at Ulm, he managed a daring escape with two thousand cavalry to Bohemia, where he rallied local troops and militia, successfully distracting the Bavarian division from the Coalition's movements.

Ferdinand's military prowess continued to shine in eighteen oh nine during the War of the Fifth Coalition. He led an army of thirty-six thousand men into the Duchy of Warsaw, aiming to incite a local uprising against Napoleon. His victory at the Battle of Raszyn allowed him to recapture Warsaw, although he was later forced to withdraw from the city and relinquish control of Kraków and Galicia.

In eighteen fifteen, he commanded two divisions of the Austrian Reserve in the War of the Seventh Coalition. The following year, he was appointed military commander in Hungary, and in eighteen thirty, he became the military and civil governor of Galicia, residing in Lemberg. After the Revolution of eighteen forty-eight, Ferdinand spent much of his time in Italy.

Ferdinand never married and passed away in eighteen fifty at Schloss Ebenzweier in Altmünster near Gmunden, Austria.
