Ardem Patapoutian

Ardem Patapoutian, born on October second, nineteen sixty-seven, is a distinguished Lebanese-American molecular biologist and neuroscientist. With Armenian heritage, he has made significant contributions to the field of sensory biology, particularly in understanding how our bodies perceive various stimuli.

His groundbreaking research has focused on the characterization of the PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 receptors, which are crucial for detecting pressure, as well as the TRPM8 receptor, known for its role in sensing menthol and temperature. These discoveries have not only advanced scientific knowledge but have also opened new avenues for understanding sensory mechanisms.

Currently, Patapoutian serves as a professor of neuroscience and is an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, based at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California. His work continues to inspire a new generation of scientists and researchers.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field, Patapoutian was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in twenty twenty-one, sharing this prestigious honor with fellow scientist David Julius.
