Ari Aster, born on July 15, 1986, is an acclaimed American filmmaker known for his distinctive approach to storytelling that blends dark comedy with horror and graphic violence. He first gained attention with his short horror film, The Strange Thing About the Johnsons, which he wrote and directed during his studies at the AFI Conservatory in 2011. This early work set the stage for his later successes in the horror genre.
His breakout feature films, Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019), solidified Aster's reputation as a master of elevated horror. Both films were praised for their innovative narratives and unsettling atmospheres, showcasing his ability to evoke deep emotional responses from audiences.
In 2019, Aster co-founded the production company Square Peg with Danish producer Lars Knudsen, marking a new chapter in his career. He ventured beyond horror with the surrealist comedy-drama Beau Is Afraid (2023) and the satirical neo-Western thriller Eddington (2025). While both films received positive critical reviews, they struggled to recoup their production budgets at the box office.
