Ariel Pink

Ariel Marcus Rosenberg, known professionally as Ariel Pink, is an influential American musician, singer, and songwriter born on June 24, 1978, in Los Angeles. His unique sound is heavily inspired by the popular music of the 1960s to 1980s, characterized by a lo-fi aesthetic and home-recorded albums that have left a significant mark on the indie music scene since the late 2000s. Often referred to as the 'godfather' of hypnagogic pop and chillwave, Pink's work evokes the media, sounds, and technologies of past decades, bridging the gap between high and low art in independent music.

Pink's musical journey began in his teenage years when he started experimenting with an eight-track Portastudio. Influenced by artists like Michael Jackson, the Cure, and R. Stevie Moore, he amassed an impressive collection of over two hundred cassette tapes during a prolific eight-year period from 1996 to 2003. His early albums, including The Doldrums, House Arrest, and Worn Copy, released on Animal Collective's Paw Tracks label, quickly garnered a cult following.

Throughout the 2000s, Pink's distinctive sound sparked renewed interest in hauntological phenomena, positioning him as a central figure in the discussion. Until 2014, his music was primarily credited to Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, a solo project that often blurred the lines with his touring band. His career took a significant turn after signing with 4AD, leading to the release of his critically acclaimed album Before Today in 2010, followed by Mature Themes, Pom Pom, and Dedicated to Bobby Jameson.

Despite his musical success, Pink has faced several controversies, particularly due to his provocative statements and actions. In 2021, he lost support from Mexican Summer after attending the January 6 Capitol attack. Undeterred, he formed a new band, Ariel Pink's Dark Side, and released two albums, The Key of Joy Is Disobedience in 2022 and Never Made A Demo, Ever in 2023, continuing to push the boundaries of his artistic expression.
