Arlen Specter

Arlen Specter, born on February twelfth, nineteen thirty, in Wichita, Kansas, was a prominent American lawyer, military officer, and politician. He was the son of Jewish immigrants from Russia or Ukraine and pursued higher education at the University of Pennsylvania before serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After his military service, he graduated from Yale Law School and established a law firm with Marvin Katz, who later became a federal judge.

His political career began in earnest when he was elected as the District Attorney of Philadelphia in nineteen sixty-five, a role he held until nineteen seventy-three. Specter gained national prominence as a United States Senator from Pennsylvania, serving from nineteen eighty-one until two thousand eleven. He was first elected in nineteen eighty and became the longest-serving senator from Pennsylvania, representing the state for three decades.

Throughout his Senate tenure, Specter was known for his centrist political stance. He served as the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee from two thousand five to two thousand seven and was recognized by Time magazine in two thousand six as one of America's Ten Best Senators. His political journey was marked by a party switch; he was a Democrat from nineteen fifty-one to nineteen sixty-five, a Republican until two thousand nine, and then returned to the Democratic Party.

Despite facing significant health challenges, including a brain tumor surgery in nineteen ninety-three and a Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis in early two thousand five, Specter continued to fulfill his Senate duties while undergoing treatment. He ultimately passed away from complications related to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma on October fourteenth, two thousand twelve, leaving behind a legacy of public service and legal expertise.
