Arlene Foster

Arlene Foster, born on July 17, 1970, is a prominent politician and lawyer who made history as the first woman to serve as both the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and the First Minister of Northern Ireland. Her political career began in earnest when she was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Fermanagh and South Tyrone in 2003, a position she held until 2021.

Foster's tenure in the Northern Ireland Executive saw her take on several key roles, including Minister of the Environment from 2007 to 2008, Minister for Enterprise and Investment from 2008 to 2015, and Minister for Finance and Personnel from 2015 to 2016. In December 2015, she succeeded Peter Robinson as the leader of the DUP, and in January 2016, she became the First Minister, sharing power with Martin McGuinness.

Her time as First Minister was marked by controversy, particularly surrounding the Renewable Heat Incentive scandal, which led to significant financial implications for taxpayers. Despite calls for her resignation amid allegations of corruption, Foster remained steadfast in her position, attributing the criticism to misogyny. However, following McGuinness's resignation in January 2017, she was ultimately removed from office.

After a period of political turbulence, Foster returned as First Minister in January 2020, following the reinstatement of the executive under the New Decade, New Approach agreement. However, her leadership faced challenges, and in April 2021, she announced her resignation as party leader and First Minister after losing the confidence of a significant number of party members. She officially left office in June 2021 and transitioned to a role as a presenter on GB News.

Looking ahead, Foster's career continues to evolve, with her appointment as chairperson of Intertrade UK confirmed for September 2024, a role aimed at promoting trade within the UK as part of a broader effort to restore devolution.
