Armand Frappier

Armand Frappier, born on November twenty-sixth, nineteen oh four, in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec, was a distinguished Canadian physician and microbiologist renowned for his expertise in tuberculosis. The son of Arthur-Alexis Frappier and Bernadette Codebecq, his life was profoundly impacted by the loss of his mother to tuberculosis in nineteen twenty-three, which ignited his passion for combating this devastating disease.

Frappier's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in nineteen twenty-four, followed by a medical degree from the Université de Montréal in nineteen thirty. He furthered his education by obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the same institution in nineteen thirty-three. His commitment to public health led him to establish the Institut de microbiologie et d'hygiène de Montréal in nineteen thirty-eight, modeled after the prestigious Pasteur Institute in Paris and the Connaught Laboratories at the University of Toronto. This institution became the first French-language school of hygiene globally, and he served as its director for thirty-eight years, with the institute being renamed in his honor in nineteen seventy-five.

Throughout his career, Frappier played a pivotal role in the fight against tuberculosis in Canada. He was among the first researchers to validate the safety and efficacy of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccine, contributing significantly to public health initiatives aimed at eradicating this disease.
