Armando Calderón Sol

Armando Calderón Sol, born on June twenty-four, nineteen forty-eight, was a prominent Salvadoran politician, lawyer, and businessman. He made history as the thirty-eighth President of El Salvador, serving from nineteen ninety-four to nineteen ninety-nine as a member of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA). His presidency marked a significant milestone as he was the first leader elected after the conclusion of the Salvadoran Civil War, which lasted from nineteen seventy-nine to nineteen ninety-two.

Calderón Sol's political journey began in nineteen seventy-nine when he became active in the Salvadoran Nationalist Movement (MNS), a group with alleged ties to far-right death squads. In nineteen eighty-one, he co-founded ARENA and played a crucial role on its National Executive Council (COENA). His political career included serving as a deputy in the Legislative Assembly from nineteen eighty-five to nineteen eighty-eight, and he held the position of Mayor of San Salvador from nineteen eighty-eight until nineteen ninety-four.

In the second round of the nineteen ninety-four presidential election, Calderón Sol secured victory with over sixty-eight percent of the vote. His administration focused on privatizing state-owned industries, implementing criminal justice reforms, and guiding El Salvador through its post-civil war transition. However, his government faced criticism for a controversial increase in the value-added tax in nineteen ninety-five and for dealing with unrest from civil war veterans dissatisfied with the terms of the Chapultepec Peace Accords, which he had helped negotiate during his tenure as mayor.

Even after leaving the presidency, Calderón Sol remained an active figure in Salvadoran politics. He passed away in Houston, Texas, in two thousand seventeen due to lung cancer and was laid to rest in San Salvador, leaving behind a complex legacy in the nation's history.
