Armin Laschet

Armin Laschet, born on February eighteenth, nineteen sixty-one, is a prominent German politician and journalist who has made significant contributions to both state and national politics. He served as the Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia from June twenty-seventh, two thousand seventeen, to October twenty-sixth, two thousand twenty-one. His leadership of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) spanned from January twenty-second, two thousand twenty-one, to January thirty-first, two thousand twenty-two, during which he was also elected to the German Bundestag following the two thousand twenty-one federal election.

Laschet's academic background includes a law degree, which he complemented with a career in journalism before fully immersing himself in politics. His political journey began in nineteen ninety-four when he was elected to the Bundestag, and he later served as a Member of the European Parliament starting in nineteen ninety-nine. In two thousand five, he transitioned to state politics in North Rhine-Westphalia, where he became a member of the state government. By two thousand twelve, he had risen to the position of leader of the state party, culminating in his election as Prime Minister in two thousand seventeen.

In January two thousand twenty-one, Laschet was elected as the leader of the CDU, securing fifty-two point eight percent of the delegate votes in a competitive election against Friedrich Merz. His candidacy for Chancellor of Germany was confirmed in April two thousand twenty-one, following the concession of rival Markus Söder. Laschet's cabinet was a coalition of his own CDU and the liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP), reflecting his commitment to collaborative governance.

Born into a devout Roman Catholic family of German-speaking Walloon descent, Laschet's heritage includes Belgian roots from his paternal grandparents. He is married to Susanne Malangré, whom he met in a Catholic children's choir during their childhood. Susanne hails from a notable Aachen political family of French-speaking Walloon origin. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from TED University on February ninth, two thousand twenty-four, and he currently serves as a lecturer in political science at the University of Munich.
