Arne Duncan

Arne Duncan, born on November sixth, nineteen sixty-four, is a distinguished American educator and former professional basketball player. He made history as the ninth United States Secretary of Education, serving under President Barack Obama from two thousand nine to two thousand sixteen. Prior to this role, Duncan was the Chief Executive Officer of Chicago Public Schools from two thousand one to two thousand nine, where he laid the groundwork for his future policies in education.

During his tenure as Secretary of Education, Duncan championed the expansion of standardized testing, charter schools, and national learning standards, including the Common Core. He was instrumental in overseeing the Race to the Top program, which incentivized states to adopt these educational reforms by offering grants and exemptions from the No Child Left Behind Act. Although he initially enjoyed bipartisan support, his policies became contentious, particularly among teachers' unions and members of the Republican Party, who criticized his approach to evaluating teacher performance through testing.

In addition to his educational reforms, Duncan focused on expanding student financial aid and loan forgiveness programs. However, he faced challenges in implementing other higher education initiatives, such as regulating for-profit colleges and establishing a government rating system for universities. In two thousand fifteen, he resigned to return to Chicago with his family, where he has since dedicated his efforts to anti-violence programs.

Before his political career, Duncan was a notable athlete, serving as co-captain of the basketball team at Harvard College. He played professionally for the Rhode Island Gulls in the United States and the Eastside Spectres in Australia. Even while in office, he continued to engage in basketball, using the sport to foster relationships with Chicago politicians. His athletic prowess is evident in his impressive record, winning nine out of eleven Hoop It Up three-on-three competitions between two thousand three and two thousand fourteen, and participating in the NBA All-Star Celebrity Games in two thousand twelve, two thousand thirteen, two thousand fourteen, and two thousand twenty, where he also claimed the USA Basketball three-on-three championship in two thousand fourteen.
