Arnold Beckman

Arnold Beckman, born on April 10, 1900, was a distinguished American chemist, inventor, electrical engineer, and businessperson. His groundbreaking work at the California Institute of Technology led to the invention of the pH meter in 1934, a pivotal device that transformed the fields of chemistry and biology by enabling precise measurements of acidity and alkalinity.

In addition to the pH meter, Beckman developed the DU spectrophotometer, which is often hailed as one of the most significant instruments in advancing bioscience. His innovations not only enhanced scientific research but also laid the groundwork for future technological advancements.

Beckman played a crucial role in the establishment of Silicon Valley by funding the Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory, the first silicon transistor company in California. This venture marked a significant milestone in the evolution of the tech industry.

After serving as president of Beckman Instruments, he transitioned to the role of chairman of the board of directors in 1965. In 1981, he agreed to sell the company, which subsequently merged with SmithKline to create SmithKline Beckman. Following his retirement, Arnold and his wife Mabel, who lived from nineteen hundred to nineteen eighty-nine, became prominent philanthropists, contributing significantly to various causes across the United States.
