Arnold Belkin

Arnold Belkin, born on December ninth, nineteen thirty, was a distinguished Canadian-Mexican painter and university teacher. He is celebrated for his pivotal role in perpetuating the Mexican muralism tradition during a period when many of his contemporaries were moving away from it. Raised in western Canada, Belkin's artistic journey began in his homeland, yet he found himself drawn not to the traditional Canadian art scene but to the vibrant works of Diego Rivera, which he discovered in a magazine.

At the tender age of eighteen, Belkin made the bold decision to relocate to Mexico, where he further honed his artistic skills. His focus on murals led him to innovate a concept he termed a 'portable mural,' allowing him to adapt his work to the evolving architectural styles of the time. This adaptability showcased his commitment to merging traditional techniques with contemporary needs.

Throughout his career, Belkin created a significant body of work, including notable series of canvas paintings. While he spent the majority of his life in Mexico, he also had a notable stint in New York City from the late nineteen sixties to the mid-seventies, which contributed to his artistic development.

Among his most recognized contributions are the murals he crafted for the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in the Iztapalapa borough of Mexico City. These works not only reflect his mastery of the muralist tradition but also his ability to engage with social and cultural themes, making him a vital figure in the art world.
