Art Tatum

Arthur Tatum Jr., born on October 13, 1909, in Toledo, Ohio, emerged as a monumental figure in the world of jazz piano. His extraordinary technical ability garnered acclaim from fellow musicians early in his career, establishing him as one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. Tatum's innovative approach to music extended the vocabulary and boundaries of jazz piano, moving beyond his initial stride influences through the creative use of reharmonization, voicing, and bitonality.

In his teenage years, Tatum began playing piano professionally and even hosted his own radio program that was rebroadcast nationwide. By 1932, he left Toledo to perform as a solo pianist in major urban centers such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. This period marked the beginning of a pattern in Tatum's career, characterized by paid performances followed by long after-hours sessions, often accompanied by significant alcohol consumption. While this lifestyle did not hinder his musical prowess, it ultimately took a toll on his health.

The 1940s saw Tatum leading a commercially successful trio for a brief period and transitioning to more formal jazz concert settings, including performances at the renowned Jazz at the Philharmonic events produced by Norman Granz. Despite his talent, Tatum's popularity waned towards the end of the decade as he remained committed to his unique style, disregarding the emerging bebop movement. In the mid-1950s, Granz recorded Tatum extensively in both solo and small group formats, with his final recording session occurring just two months before his untimely death from uremia at the age of forty-seven.
