Arthur Meighen

Arthur Meighen, born on June sixteenth, eighteen seventy-four, in Anderson, Ontario, was a prominent Canadian lawyer and politician. His family hailed from County Londonderry, Ireland. Meighen pursued his education in mathematics at the University of Toronto before embarking on a legal career, eventually establishing his practice in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.

Entering the political arena, Meighen became a member of the House of Commons in nineteen oh eight. His political journey saw him appointed to the Cabinet of Prime Minister Robert Borden in nineteen thirteen, where he held significant roles including solicitor general, minister of the interior, and superintendent-general of Indian affairs. In July nineteen twenty, he succeeded Borden as the leader of the Conservative Party and became the ninth prime minister of Canada, marking a historic moment as the first prime minister born after Confederation.

Meighen's first term as prime minister was short-lived, as he faced a heavy defeat in the nineteen twenty-one election against Mackenzie King and the Liberal Party. Although he lost his seat, he made a comeback in a nineteen twenty-two by-election and continued to lead the Opposition.
