Artur da Costa e Silva

Artur da Costa e Silva, born on October third, nineteen ninety-nine, was a prominent figure in Brazilian history, serving as a Marshal in the Brazilian Army and the second president of the military government that emerged following the coup d'état in nineteen sixty-four. His military career culminated in the rank of Marshal, and he previously held the position of Minister of War under President Castelo Branco.

His presidency marked a significant turning point in Brazil's military dictatorship, particularly after the implementation of Institutional Act five, which granted him sweeping powers. This act allowed him to dissolve the National Congress, remove politicians from their positions, and enforce severe repression against dissenters. The regime's response to opposition was marked by both legal and illegal actions, including the use of torture against civilians.

Despite the oppressive political climate, Costa e Silva's administration was noted for its economic achievements. Under his leadership, Brazil experienced a remarkable growth in GDP, averaging seven point eighty-six percent, and a ten point sixty-eight percent increase in per capita income, averaging five point thirty-four percent. He took office with inflation at twenty-five point zero one percent and managed to reduce it to nineteen point thirty-one percent during a period known as the Brazilian economic miracle, which lasted from nineteen sixty-eight to nineteen seventy-three.
