Arun Manilal Gandhi, born on April 14, 1934, is a prominent South African–American philosopher, writer, journalist, politician, and political activist. As the son of Manilal Gandhi and the grandson of the revered Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, Arun carries a legacy steeped in the principles of nonviolence and social justice.
In 2017, he shared his insights and experiences in his book, The Gift of Anger: And Other Lessons From My Grandfather Mahatma Gandhi, published by Gallery Books/Jeter Publishing. This work reflects not only his familial heritage but also his personal journey as a socio-political activist.
Arun's critical perspective on contemporary issues is evident in his writings, including a notable critique of the Indian government for subsidizing a film about his grandfather's life with twenty-five million dollars in 1982. His commitment to activism led him to immigrate to the United States with his family in 1987, where he pursued his studies at the University of Mississippi.
Eventually, the family settled in Memphis, Tennessee, where they established the M. K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, hosted by Christian Brothers University. Through this institute, Arun continues to promote the values of peace and nonviolence, honoring the legacy of his grandfather while addressing modern societal challenges.
