Arved Viirlaid

Arved Viirlaid, born on April eleventh, nineteen twenty-two, in Padise, Harju County, Estonia, was a notable Estonian-Canadian writer and partisan. His literary journey began after a tumultuous period during the Second World War, where he fought in the Estonian regiment in Finland. Following the war, he returned to Estonia in nineteen forty-four, but soon found himself escaping the grips of Soviet occupation.

After his escape, Viirlaid initially settled in the United Kingdom before making Canada his home in nineteen fifty-three. His experiences during the war and his subsequent exile deeply influenced his writing, leading him to publish nine novels and several poetry collections throughout his career.

Viirlaid's first novel, Tormiaasta (The Year of Storms), was released in nineteen forty-nine, marking the beginning of his literary contributions. His second major work, Ristideta hauad (Graves Without Crosses), published in nineteen fifty-two, gained international recognition, being translated into seven languages, with the English version appearing in nineteen seventy-two, featuring a preface by John Diefenbaker. Another significant work, Sadu jõkke (Rain for the River), published in nineteen sixty-five, also found its way into English translation.

In recognition of his contributions to literature and his heritage, Viirlaid was honored with the Order of the National Coat of Arms, 3rd Class, by the President of Estonia in nineteen ninety-seven, solidifying his legacy as a prominent figure in Estonian literature.
