Asa Griggs Candler

Asa Griggs Candler Sr., born on December 30, 1851, was a prominent American entrepreneur and politician whose legacy is deeply intertwined with the Coca-Cola Company. In 1888, he made a pivotal investment by purchasing the Coca-Cola recipe from chemist John Stith Pemberton for a mere two hundred thirty-eight dollars and ninety-eight cents, a sum that would equate to over eight thousand five hundred sixty-three dollars in 2025.

In 1892, Candler founded the Coca-Cola Company, transforming it into a major player in the beverage industry. His vision and leadership not only propelled the company to success but also established him as a significant figure in Atlanta's civic landscape. Candler's influence extended beyond business; he served as the 41st mayor of Atlanta from 1916 to 1919, contributing to the city's development and growth.

His contributions to Atlanta are commemorated through various landmarks, including Candler Field, which is now known as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and Candler Park. Additionally, he was responsible for the construction of several notable buildings, including the Candler Building in Atlanta, as well as structures in Kansas City, New York City, and Baltimore's Inner Harbor area.
