Ashikaga Yoshihisa

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Ashikaga Yoshihisa

Ashikaga Yoshihisa, born on December eleventh, fourteen sixty-five, was the ninth shōgun of the Ashikaga shogunate, reigning from fourteen seventy-three to fourteen eighty-nine during Japan's Muromachi period. He was the son of the eighth shōgun, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, and his wife, Hino Tomiko.

Yoshihisa's path to leadership was marked by familial rivalry. In fourteen sixty-four, Yoshimasa, then nearly thirty years old and without an heir, adopted his younger brother, Ashikaga Yoshimi, as his successor. However, the birth of Yoshihisa the following year ignited a fierce struggle for succession between the brothers, culminating in the outbreak of the Ōnin War in fourteen sixty-seven, a conflict that heralded the beginning of the Sengoku period in Japanese history.

In the midst of this turmoil, Yoshimasa made the pivotal decision to retire in fourteen seventy-three, passing the mantle of Sei-i Taishōgun to his son, Yoshihisa. This transition marked a significant moment in the shogunate's history, as Yoshihisa took on the responsibilities of leadership during a time of great strife and division.
