Ashikaga Yoshikazu

Ashikaga Yoshikazu, born on August twenty-seventh, fourteen oh seven, was the fifth shōgun of the Ashikaga shogunate, reigning briefly from fourteen twenty-three to fourteen twenty-five during Japan's Muromachi period. He was the son of the fourth shōgun, Ashikaga Yoshimochi, who ceded power to him, allowing Yoshikazu to ascend to the position of Sei-i Taishōgun at the young age of eighteen, according to East Asian age reckoning.

Yoshikazu's reign was marked by its brevity, as he ruled for only two years before his untimely death in fourteen twenty-five. His demise was reportedly accelerated by a lifestyle characterized by excessive drinking, as noted in the historical account, Oguri Hangan ichidaiki. Despite his short tenure, his appointment as shōgun came at a significant time, coinciding with the death of Emperor Go-Kameyama just a year later.

Following Yoshikazu's death, he was succeeded by his father, Yoshimochi, in the same year. The political landscape shifted further when Yoshimochi passed away in fourteen twenty-eight, leading to the ascension of Go-Hanazono to the throne, marking a second repudiation of prior agreements. The sixth official shōgun, Ashikaga Yoshinori, would later take power in fourteen twenty-nine, continuing the legacy of the Ashikaga shogunate.

Yoshikazu was also known by his Buddhist name, Chōtoku-in, reflecting the spiritual dimensions of his life amidst the tumultuous political environment of his time.
