Ashley Montagu

Ashley Montagu, born Ehrenberg on June twenty-eighth, nineteen oh five, was a prominent British-American anthropologist and university educator. He is renowned for his influential work in the fields of race and gender, particularly their intersections with politics and societal development. In nineteen fifty, he served as the rapporteur for UNESCO's significant statement on race, which aimed to address and clarify misconceptions surrounding racial differences.

After moving to the United States, Montagu adopted the name Ashley Montagu and became a naturalized citizen in nineteen forty. His academic career flourished as he taught at prestigious institutions such as Harvard, Princeton, Rutgers, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and New York University. However, his tenure at Rutgers was cut short due to the McCarthy hearings, prompting him to transition into a public intellectual role during the nineteen fifties and sixties.

In this new capacity, Montagu became a familiar face on television and contributed articles to various magazines and newspapers, sharing his insights with a broader audience. Over his lifetime, he authored more than sixty books, solidifying his legacy as a leading thinker in anthropology. In nineteen ninety-five, his contributions to humanism were recognized when the American Humanist Association named him the Humanist of the Year.
