Ashot Nadanian

Ashot Nadanian, born on September nineteenth, nineteen seventy-two, is a distinguished Armenian chess International Master, renowned for his contributions to chess theory and coaching. Achieving the title of International Master in nineteen ninety-seven, Nadanian has made significant strides in opening theory, with two notable variations named in his honor: the Nadanian Variation in the Grünfeld Defence and the Nadanian Attack in the Queen's Pawn Opening.

Beginning his coaching career at the age of twenty-two, Nadanian has played a pivotal role in the development of three grandmasters. His coaching expertise has extended to national teams, including those of Kuwait and Singapore. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the title of Honoured Coach of Armenia in nineteen ninety-eight and later became a FIDE Senior Trainer in twenty seventeen.

Despite his impressive skills, Nadanian's competitive journey has been marked by unfulfilled potential. He participated in the nineteen ninety-six Chess Olympiad and narrowly missed qualifying for the nineteen ninety-nine FIDE World Chess Championship. Valery Chekhov noted that Nadanian possesses enormous chess potential, yet struggled to dedicate sufficient time to professional play. Levon Aronian echoed this sentiment, attributing Nadanian's limited display of talent to the challenging circumstances in Armenia.

Known for his imaginative attacking style, Nadanian has earned various accolades, being described as a 'chess artist,' a 'brilliant eccentric,' the 'Armenian Tal,' and even 'Kasparov's half-brother.' His unique approach to the game has left a lasting impact, with the sixth chapter of Tibor Karolyi's two thousand nine book, 'Genius in the Background,' dedicated to his legacy.
