Aslan Abashidze

Aslan Abashidze, born on July 20, 1938, is a notable figure in Georgian politics, having served as the leader of the Ajarian Autonomous Republic from August 18, 1991, until May 5, 2004. His tenure was marked by significant political challenges and a complex relationship with the central Georgian government.

Abashidze's leadership came to an abrupt end during the 2004 Adjara crisis, a period characterized by mass opposition rallies and increasing pressure from the central authorities. Following his resignation, he relocated to Moscow, Russia, where he has since resided.

In January 2007, the Batumi city court convicted Abashidze in absentia for misuse of office and embezzlement, specifically for misappropriating a substantial amount of state funds, totaling ninety-eight million two hundred thousand Georgian Lari. This conviction resulted in a fifteen-year prison sentence.

Additionally, Abashidze faces serious allegations related to the murder of his former deputy, Nodar Imnadze, which dates back to 1991. These events have significantly shaped his controversial legacy in Georgian politics.
